History of Water Skiing

The first known person try water ski is Ralph Samuelson from Minnesota. In 1922, it came to his mind to try skiing on water. He utilized barrel staves and tried being pulled by a boat. When this failed, Samuelson tried the usual snow skis, but he it also did not worked. Because of these unsuccessful attempts, Ralph Samuelson finally tried to create his own pair of skis that he can efficiently used to ski on water.

He made a pair 8 X 9 inch boards and attached them leather straps to hold his feet in place. He created his own towrope by using a100-feet long sash cord with an iron ring for the handle. These self-made ski set was attached to a boat. The first boat driver of Samuelson is his brother.

They first used their water ski set at Lake Pepin at Minnesota with a maximum speed of 20 mph. It was indeed a successful event. Samuelson then pursued the new face of skiing and tried to perfect and polish the new water ski sport. He mastered every aspect of water skiing and went on to build a ramp. Samuelson was always looking for new things to accomplish with the water skies.

And on the 8th of July 1925, he became the first known water ski jumper as he jumped with an altitude of 60 feet off its raised end on a half- drawn diving platform. Later that year, Samuelson made a further advancement in water skiing by attaching a 200 feet long sash cord into a 200 horsepower World War I flying boat that pulled him behind with a speed of 80 mph. This incident made him the first speed skier ever.

After these remarkable water ski accomplishments by Samuelson, water skiing became a popular sport from then on. More and more water ski enthusiasts later contributed in the perfection and in making other people aware of the excitement and pleasure of water skiing.

Water Skiing was introduced at French Riviera on 1929 by Count Maximilian Pulaski. And on 1939, the governing body for water skiing called the American Water Ski Association or AWSA was organized by Dan Hains of New York.

During 1946, there were very significant progress and advancements in water skiing that lead to the need of controlling body to coordinate skiing activities all over the world and to make up rules and regulations. The World Water Ski Union was formed at the same year and it creation paved way to the very first World War Ski Championships that was held in 1949 at Juan-les-Pins.

And since water skiing became even more popular, the advent of the well-designed equipment for water skiing initiated in 1950s. There are some manufacturers that offer boats that are designed to cater the skiers’ requirements. Durable and well tested materials are utilized in the production and design of waters skis. These developments in combination with less expensive and more reliable water ski accessories have made water skiing sport a well celebrated activity.

In 1972, water skiing became included in Olympics as an exhibition sports. There are also numerous water ski competitions and tournaments that were organized starting that year. The first National Show Ski Tournament was held in 1974 and the first National Intercollegiate Water Ski Championships was held in 1979.

And nowadays, water ski is so famous that it became one of the favorite activities for families. There are a continuous growing number of people who are enjoying the wonders of this exciting sport. Water ski is particularly common in those places that have warmer weather and water.
